Did you know that there are more than 8,000 nails holding on the average Northern Virginia roof? When it’s time for roof replacement, all of those nails have to go somewhere – whether in the trash, on the lawn or somewhere else on your property. In the worst-case scenario, some of those nails will end up in tires or in a foot or paw. At Roofing & More, our goal is zero nails left behind!

Where Do 8,000 Nails Go When a Roof is Removed?

Our Plan: Keep Nails Contained

When removing existing roofing, nails inevitably fly in all directions. In order to contain them, a roofing company must have a plan – and most do not. At Roofing & More, we aim to account for all 8,000 nails that come out of a roof that’s undergoing replacement. Here’s more about the process our crews use to ensure nails don’t become a hazard.

  1. Preparation prior to installation. Many companies just show up and start the job. Some may lay a tarp down. Roofing & More crews follow a step-by-step procedure that protects a home and the surrounding landscape from stray nails. Every crew member plays a part in preparing your home before installation.
  2. Tarp hanging (not laying). When our workers arrive on site, one person will hang tarps that extend from the gutters down to the ground. In summer, if you lay tarps on flowers or bushes, those plants can easily be damaged. Instead, we are careful to stretch each tarp so it hangs over bushes and other ornamentals. This has the added advantage of preventing nails from falling behind bushes.
  3. Cordoning off the work area. Prior to starting a roof installation, we cordon off the construction area around a home with orange cones and caution tape. This prevents neighbors, the UPS driver and other passersby from entering the work area and minimizes liability for contractor and homeowner.
  4. Sweeping for nails. We finish everything up by running different types of magnets over the entire work area to ensure that any stray nails are captured and taken with us at project completion.
