How StainGuard Plus™ Technology Works

GAF developed its StainGuard Plus technology over the course of nearly a decade. Shingles with this technology have algae resistance so powerful that GAF backs them with a 25-year limited warranty against blue-green algae discoloration.

Many traditional algae-resistant shingles have a layer of algae-fighting copper that’s activated on the roof when it gets wet. However, since this technology was developed more than a quarter-century ago, it is less efficient than new innovations. As the roof ages, less copper is released, reducing the shingles’ algae resistance.

In contrast, GAF’s StainGuard Plus Time-Release technology features long-lasting algae protection. StainGuard Plus shingles have specially engineered capsules that are infused with thousands of copper microsites. These capsules release 10 times as much algae-killing copper as the old technology! They slowly and steadily release just the right amount of copper throughout the roof’s service life. Features of Timberline® Ultra HD Shingles

Currently, StainGuard Plus technology is available with Timberline® Ultra HD® shingles. These shingles are beautiful, durable and long-lasting. They are 54% thicker than standard architectural shingles and feature proprietary color blends and an enhanced shadow effect. They look fantastic compared with ordinary non-architectural shingles because of their ultra-dimensional wood shake look.
