According to the Small Business Administration (SBA), the government agency that keeps the stats on business failures and claims, more than half of new businesses will disappear within the first five years of start-up. We want to help you winterize your home for the cold winter ahead. Here are some ways you can make sure you stay warm this winter while saving money.

1.     The Exterior

It’s important that the exterior of your home (windows, doors, etc.) is as sealed as possible. Inspect the outside of your house for cracks and exposed entry points around pipes or vents. If you do find cracks or other areas where cold air can get in make sure to seal them properly; use weather-stripping for the doors and caulk for the windows.

Install storm windows and if you have a basement cover its wells with shields to keep water from storing up and leaking through your basement windows.

2.      Inspect Roof, Gutters & Downspouts

Inspect your roof for loose or worm shingles and any areas that could allow water to seep through. Also, add extra insulation to your attic to help prevent warm air from creeping to your roof and causing ice dams.

Make sure your gutters are clean and clear of all debris so that rain water can easily flow through them.

3.       Prepare an Emergency Kit

Stormy weather can mean power outages and  that means no heat and electricity in the winter. An emergency prepared kit is handy in a power outage situation. Here is a list of items to include in your own home kit:

• Candles and matches/lighter for use during a power shortage.
• A battery back-up to protect your computer and other sensitive electronic equipment.
• Store bottled water and non-perishable food, blankets and a first-aid kit in a dry and easily accessible place.
• If you have a pet keep extra supplies such as food, water, toys, treat, etc.
• Entertainment such as games, cards, books – anything you can do by candle light.
• Battery operated heater.
• Chopped wood if you have a wood burning fireplace.
